Ludwig Drum Company vs Slingerland Drum Company, Set of legal Briefs, pleadings
Actually the litigation was between Ludwig and Solar Musical Instrument Company. The fact that Solar was a shell company under the control of the Slingerland family and had only one customer, the Slingerland Drum Company, is just one of the interesting scenarios that is revealed in these documents. In all there are 255 pages and they offer a wide range of insights into not only Ludwig, Slingerland, and Solar, but also Camco and a great many individuals such as H. Slingerland, Wm F Ludwig Sr and Wm F Ludwig II. These pages have been very useful to me as I authored books on Franks Drum Shop, Ludwig, Slingerland, and Camco. At about the time I obtained these pages, I interviewed one Billy Ray Connor. Connor had been at the center of the controversy, as he was the engineer who set up and operated Slingerland’s drum head manufacturing that brought on this litigation. Connor was struck by the animosity between the Slingerland and Ludwig families. This lawsuit was not the first time these familes had fought in court, but it was the most high profile and significant litigation. When I first published “Franks For The Memories” which included some facts from these pages, I was threatened with a lawsuit from Wm F Ludwig II. I was able to document my facts but did agree to reword certain passages in any future editions of the book in order to preserve my relationship with Mr. I agree with the sentiments expressed by Mr. Connor; had the Slingerlands and Ludwigs been able to get along and work on the mylar drum head issues together, the American percussion industry would have evolved very differently. Although the pages require a bit of interpretation, the stories they tell are very interesting and involve depositions taken in Switzerland, translations of statements originally given in German, historical precedents for the drumhead-making manufacturing processes, and much more.
